Several studies have shown that the difficulties in the production of certain non-native sounds often derive from inaccurate perception (Flege, 1995; Munro & Bohn, 2007). One of the factors behind such perceptual biases is the interference of the phonological system of the learner’s L1 (Strange, 1995). This study aimed at identifying the L2 consonantal segments inaccurately produced in word-initial position by native Cantonese speakers, learners of European Portuguese (EP), and assessing the degree of cross-language perceptual similarity to investigate whether the speech deviations identified have a perceptual nature. To analyze degree of cross-language similarity, a perceptual assimilation task (PAT, Cebrian, Mora & Aliaga-Garcia, 2010) was carried out by 11 Macanese participants (with an elementary proficiency level in EP and ages ranging from 16 to 19 years – mean=17,09 years), who heard 128 CV (C=consonant, V=vowel) stimuli of EP and identified the initial consonant sound according to L1 categories, rating the degree of goodness-of-fit on a 7-point Likert scale. To assess segment production accuracy, the Macanese participants were recorded reading carrier sentences including the target consonants embedded in CVto contexts (eg.: É o pato., É o bato.). The 128 stimuli CVto obtained were assessed by 30 EP native speakers, who identified the initial sound and rated degree of goodness-of-fit of the segment heard as an exemplar of the selected native sound, on a 7-point Likert scale. Interpreted within the framework of PAM-L2, the PAT results show that, at an early stage of learning, EP sounds /p/, /b/ , /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /ʃ/, /z/, /f/, /v/, /R/, /ʒ/ might pose perceptual difficulties and point to a (relative) ease in the perception of /m/, /n/, /l/ and /s/. Regarding the production test, the data reveal that EP nasal consonant sounds /m/ and /n/ are systematically produced in an intelligible way, the segments /ʃ/, /l/, /d/, /f/, /s/, and /g/ tend to be intelligible and the sounds /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, /v/, /z/, /ʒ/, /R/ are classified as unintelligible. Overall, the results suggest that, except for /d/ and /ʃ/ (which seem to be more accurately produced than perceived), data provided by a PAT might reliably be used to anticipate oral production inaccuracies.
