Born in Praia da Vitória, Terceira (Azores). Professor at the Faculty of Arts in Lisbon. Extremely gifted communicator on radio, television and as a teacher. Poet, novelist and essayist. His work deals with the theme of insularity, where the reality of life in the Azores is clearly present.

This sadness is now my rolling sea,
My breeze is raised in voice,
My contiguity separating
Its unarmed pieces without space,
Its identical route in all ships,
Its moving and halted cold terrace
Which is warmed in the kingdoms of coral
And wants to break upon the beaches - but where are they,
Unless they are my dry surrenderings
In the useless design of some steps?
Here and there a light - that does not seem to be,
Extinguished and lost in help,
Intermittent in the wind that I am now...
