Despite the fact that the portrait which Maria de Lourdes Belchior painted of herself in her last public speeches (the award of Honorary PhD’s from Oporto University in 1996 and New Lisbon University (UNL) in 1998) was inevitably a modest one, her students and colleagues nonetheless found it easy to recognise the person they knew from her words. She spoke of her passion for teaching, her understanding of classes as a space in which to socialise and learn together, of her craft as an interpreter of literary texts seen as a crossroads between history and aesthetics, and of the calm certainty about which so much is taught both in and out of schools; nor did she forget to thank the masters and companions who had helped train her, or to refer to her travels around the world and the way in which she always managed to reconcile them with the attachment she felt to Lisbon University’s Faculty of Literature (FLUL).

Complementing her words with a brief commentary of our own, we can say that she possessed a simultaneously broad and rigorous concept of culture, that she saw universities as places which can and should open themselves to the outside world, and that she had a Christian humanist view of life in general which could be seen in her classes, the enthusiastic way in which she communicated and her willingness to help people.

Maria de Lourdes Belchior graduated in 1946 with a dissertation entitled Da Poesia de Frei Agostinho da Cruz - Tentativa de Análise Estilística [On the Poetry of Frei Agostinho da Cruz – An Attempt at a Stylistic Analysis]. Following a short stay at Veiga Beirão School, in 1947 she was taken on as a Second Assistant Lecturer by the faculty at which she had received her own degree – Lisbon University’s Faculty of Literature, where, after an intervening spell as Reader at the Paris Catholic Institute (ICP, 1950-1952), in 1953 she obtained her PhD with a thesis on Frei António das Chagas - Um Homem e um Estilo do Século XVII [Frei António das Chagas – a Man and a Style of the 17^th Century]. In 1959, in a competitive appointment for which she submitted a paper on O Itinerário Poético de Rodrigues Lobo [The Poetic Path of Rodrigues Lobo], she was promoted to the position of Extraordinary Professor. Throughout this period she taught various subjects within the overall area of Romanic Philology, recurrent among which were Portuguese Literature II (classicism and the baroque), Spanish Literature and Portuguese Culture.

From 1963 to 1966 she was Cultural Adviser at the Portuguese Embassy in Brazil – a country around which she travelled widely, giving conferences and moderating debates on her specialist subject. From her return to Portugal in 1966 until 1970 she was Adviser to the Management of the Institute of High Culture (IAC). In 1969 she applied for the vacant post of Full Professor at Oporto University, where she held the Portuguese Literature I (Middle Ages) chair at the Faculty of Literature for a year, thereby initiating a relationship that was further extended by the support she gave to the Inter-University Centre for the History of Spirituality (CIUHE), which was based there.

Back in Lisbon, from 1970 to 1973 she was President of the Institute of High Culture and then a member of the Founding Council of New Lisbon University (UNL). In the wake of the Revolution she was Secretary of State for Culture and Scientific Research from May to December 1974. However, she rapidly elected to renounce all political appointments and in May 1975 became a co-founder of the weekly Nova Terra, where, as its Director, she was responsible for writing most of the editorials.

She spent the 1976-1977 academic year as Associate Professor at the Sorbonne and in 1978 began a long period (around ten years) teaching subjects in the field of Lusophone literatures and cultures at the University of Santa Barbara – a position which she generally accumulated with a twice-yearly presence at Lisbon University’s Faculty of Literature. From 1989 to 1998 she was Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Portuguese Cultural Centre in Paris – a role she fulfilled with extraordinary enthusiasm, promoting Portuguese courses, multidisciplinary seminars, book launches, recitals and translations of works by Portuguese authors.

In terms of both her preferred period and her methodological choices, the three major studies we mentioned above – which resulted principally from the demands of her academic career, but which, even today, are justly welcomed by literary researchers as excellent and indispensable contributions to the field – unequivocally point the way to a path that she was never to forsake: the 16^th and above all the 17^th centuries (the baroque period) as her chronological markers, and stylistics as a guideline for the way in which she looked at texts.

Although to her mind, both because of the range of his subject matter (remorse for the past, worry about the present, meditation on a bleeding Christ) and because of the linguistic mechanisms he employed (parallelisms, contrasts, hyperbatons), the Arrabidan friar Agostinho da Cruz (1540-1619) was already a forerunner of the baroque, and although the same can be said of Rodrigues Lobo (1580-1622?), a poet of disillusionment and a disciple of Góngora, it was Frei António das Chagas (1631-1682) that, thanks to his life (the contrasts, the vicissitudes and the accidents) and work (the metaphors and images, the symmetries and the manifold elements), Maria de Lourdes Belchior felt best documented this rich and sometimes misunderstood phase of our cultural life.

Which obligatorily leads us to add that it is largely to the author of these studies that we owe the rehabilitation of a whole literary era – a process which had already been under way in neighbouring Spain since the 1920’s and which many of the articles along the same lines that she subsequently published clearly confirmed to be the raison d’être of the path she had undertaken. Compiled in 1971, some of them went to make up a volume that she entitled Os Homens e os Livros - Séculos XVI e XVII [Men and Books – the 16^th and 17^th Centuries], which was followed nine years later by a companion volume called Os Homens e os Livros II - Séculos XIX e XX [Men and Books – the 19^th and 20^th Centuries].

The introductions to these two works and the thoughts on the science of literature that are included in the second volume are fundamental to any real understanding of the certainties and doubts their author experienced as she attempted to come to grips with the literary object. They very clearly reveal the choice she made, which was progressively punctuated by a rejection of any path that might lead to the dehumanisation of literature (albeit her main reproaches were aimed at the structuralist currents, with their inevitable terminological excesses).

The title of the 1981 volume reminds us that Maria de Lourdes Belchior was also interested in modern writers. In this particular book she looked primarily at the ‘1940’s generation’, but she also quite often wrote about poets and men whom she herself knew well and esteemed, such as Vitorino Nemésio, Sebastião da Gama and Ruy Belo, as well as essayists and novelists with whom she came into close contact, like Hernâni Cidade, Prado Coelho and Ruben A.

We should add that while to some extent Maria de Lourdes Belchior can be said to have played a pioneering role in terms of her interest in the baroque, there is no doubt whatsoever that she was the great and wholly convinced pioneer of stylistics in Portugal. She both argued for and herself employed an immanent (although firmly situated) way of analysing literary works, affectionately looking on them as a microcosmos which is full of meaning and which alerts us to the need to look for recurrent meanings by paying attention to the contagious force of interwoven words. This was true throughout her career as a scholar – albeit naturally in a way that was not rigid, inasmuch as (and here we should not take such a black-and-white view of her criticism of structuralism) she never refused to take advantage of the contributions which the large number of doctrinal reference works that continually reformulated existing knowledge provided at every step. She had a number of role models, but two especially left their mark on her – Rodrigues Lapa and Dámaso Alonso.

In the 1980’s the teacher-essayist took the plunge and wrote some poetry of her own, leaving us Gramática do Mundo [Grammar of the World] (1985) and Cancioneiro para Nossa Senhora - Poemas para uma Via-Sacra [Songbook for Our Lady – Poems for a Way of the Cross] (1988). In the earlier collection she sometimes took up biblical themes and topics that were also favoured by mannerism and the baroque, but always personalised her call to God as she asked for an explanation of the meaning of a world that she wanted to see deciphered but not rejected. For the Cancioneiro she reserved verses of praise and greetings, lamentations and supplications to Mary the mediator, set against the background of a Portuguese religious tradition that her know-how valued without restrictions. Despite the undeniable points of contact that existed between her and some of the poets of the "50’s generation" – to which she partly belonged – Maria de Lourdes Belchior was nonetheless close to authors of the 1970’s, one of whom prefaced one of her books.

She was a member of the Sociedade Hispânica na América (1970), the Academia Latina (1970) and the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (1975); was made Commander of the Order of the Rio Branco (1967), the Order of Santiago da Espada (1971) and the German Federal Republic’s Order of Merit (1973); was a Grand Officer of the Order of Public Teaching (1973) and an Officer of France’s Légion d'Honneur (1975); and was awarded the Europa Prize by the Académie de Marches de I'Est (1996) and the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator, 1998).
