Cesário
Verde
(1855-1886)
|
Although
he died prematurely, he left us a work (O Livro de Cesário Verde, 1887) in which he displayed the feeling
of nineteenth-century modernity in a most original manner. He wrote in the style
of Baudelaire and the Parnassians, evident in his lyrical expressiveness,
accompanied by the poetic criticism of his sentimental exaggerations and the
commonplaces of his rhetoric. His aim was to unearth the poetry in banal
everyday matters, based on a painstaking and extremely innovative formal
elaboration of these.
Vines, provided that I prune them and prop them.
Ah! The countryside is not a pastime
with bucolic poetry, nightingales, moonlight.

And
now, so hard has my life become,
I have bad moments, so sad, so perverse,
That all I feel is contempt for literature,
And I even disdain and forget my beloved verses!
