Irene Lisboa
(1892-1958)

"Vista de Lisboa" (View of Lisbon), a drawing by Ilda Moreira. The original drawing that was used to illustrate a leaflet advertising Esta Cidade!

A primary school teacher, who produced a copious work of an intimist nature (including poetry, Um Dia e Outro Dia, 1936; a diary, Solidão, 1939; and prose fiction either of an autobiographical kind, Voltar atrás, para quê?, 1956, or centred on a matrical character, Esta Cidade!). Her work did, however, link confessionalism to concrete social problems, arising from an everyday way of life that she analyses in its most common details, displaying these in a way that is typical of passive and long-suffering female characters.

Night hours.
Night begun or advanced, night.
How beautiful it is to write!
With this long nib, beautiful the letters and the gesture - the knack.
Randomly, without an anchor, I wander in time.
In spare time...
Time is spare and I am without support.
