He
introduced Romanticism into Portugal with the poem
"Camões", written in 1825, helped to develop Portuguese theatre (creating
the National Theatre and writing repertory plays, amongst which was his
masterpiece Frei Luís de Sousa,
1843), cultivated the historical novel (O
Arco de Sant'Ana, 1845) and was a notable poet writing about love and its
contradictions, sensuality and women.
