Almeida Garrett, Frei Luiz de Sousa
facsimile of the Quinta do Pinheiro edition

He introduced Romanticism into Portugal with the poem "Camões", written in 1825, helped to develop Portuguese theatre (creating the National Theatre and writing repertory plays, amongst which was his masterpiece Frei Luís de Sousa, 1843), cultivated the historical novel (O Arco de Sant'Ana, 1845) and was a notable poet writing about love and its contradictions, sensuality and women.

I do not love you, I want you: love comes from the soul.

And I in my soul - have calm,

The calm - of the tomb.

Ah! I do not love you, no I don’t.

I do not love you, I want you: love is life.

And life - not even felt

Do I bring it to you now, with me.

Ah! I do not love you, no I don’t.

Ah! I do not love you, no I don’t; and I only want you

With such a brutal and fierce desire

           That my blood devours me,

And does not reach my heart.

                                      Folhas Caídas, 1853 (excerpt)
